British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
